Send One-Time Passcodes (OTP) From Your WhatsApp Automations

Verifying user identity quickly and securely is essential for safe transactions. With the new Webhook OTP Automation, you can send instant One-Time Passcodes (OTPs) directly to your customers' WhatsApp accounts the moment your system triggers an event.

How to Set Up Webhook OTP Automations

Step 1: Create an Authentication Template

  1. Navigate to Settings > WhatsApp Templates and click Create a template.

  2. Select the Authentication usage type and click Create from scratch

  3. Confirm the usage type. Name your template (e.g., user_verification_otp), and choose the template language.

  4. The OTP expiration time, template body and footer are configured by default and cannopt be edited, to maintain Meta's guidelines.

  5. Click Submit template for Meta approval.

Step 2: Build the Webhook Automation

  1. Go to Automations > New Automation and select Webhook OTP Automation.

  2. Click Set up to generate your unique Webhook URL. Paste the URL into your application, auth system, or backend service as its target endpoint.

  3. Send a test webhook payload containing the destination phone number and the generated passcode variable. Map the phone number, and click Save.

Step 3: Map Variables & Publish

  1. Select your approved Authentication Template.

  2. Map the phone number field and the OTP code variable directly from your captured webhook payload tree and click Save.

  3. Click Publish Automation.

Once live, every time your application triggers an authentication request, your customer receives a tap-to-copy OTP on WhatsApp within seconds.
